Artificial Life Culture Tank: Tierra Specimen Aquarium

An electronic ecosystem that changes slightly each time it is observed

In this culture tank, small populations following simple rules repeat growth, death, and mutation.

The organisms shown here are not preserved specimens. Each observation forms a slightly different ecosystem.

You may stir the tank. The museum accepts no responsibility for the result.

Small organisms that appear inside the tank

The organisms shown here are not real biological life. They are tiny program-like specimens represented by color and shape so visitors can notice behavior, lineage, and change.
wander

Wanderer Type

The small drifter that forms the base of the tank.

A simple lineage that swims slowly and changes direction little by little. It rarely has a grand strategy, but its steadiness makes it easy to observe. When the tank becomes too crowded, this type often remains as a quiet background population.

  • slow movement
  • resilient to change
  • easy to observe
breeder

Breeder Type

A lineage that quickly multiplies when nutrients are available.

When energy builds up, this type attempts replication more often than others. It can fill the tank after nutrient input, but too much success creates crowding and may weaken the whole culture.

  • rapid replication
  • sensitive to crowding
  • often creates new lineages
parasite

Parasite Type

A sharp little visitor that borrows energy from nearby organisms.

This lineage survives by taking a small amount of energy from organisms around it. If it increases too much, the tank becomes unstable. Still, it is also part of the electronic ecosystem.

  • strong at close range
  • destabilizes dense tanks
  • reveals ecological pressure
scavenger

Scavenger Type

A recycler that turns the traces of dead organisms into new energy.

This type gains energy from debris left by organisms that have disappeared. It often increases after the tank has been disturbed and behaves like a small repair crew for the culture.

  • uses debris
  • recovers after disturbance
  • supports tank renewal
dormant

Dormant Type

A long-lived specimen that barely moves but keeps time inside the tank.

It moves slowly and reproduces rarely, but it can remain for a long time. Under low light it often survives especially well, becoming an old lineage that quietly anchors the aquarium.

  • long-lived
  • low-light tolerant
  • rarely multiplies

Cultivation is still in progress.
